IELTS writing task-1 Letter sample answer

Writing task-1 ( General Module)

Write a letter to the principle of your college to inform him that you have joined an evening course that appears not to match its description in the college brochure.

In your letter, you should include:
-why you have joined the course
-how the course is different from the brochure description
-what action you expect the principal to take
Start your letter with:
Dear Sir,
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Sir,
I am writing to you regarding a course I have taken at Centennial College that appears quite different from what its description in the school’s brochure.

I would like to let you know that before about a month I came across your brochure which described a French Languages weekend course that could be applied as a credit towards my university’s Bachelor of Arts degree.  As my major is language, I was very interested in taking this course to help my studies at Centennial.  Currently, however, we are three weeks into the course and have spent little time learning about French. We have only learnt about some historical background of this language and some other languages, which I do not think quite necessary for learning French. As this is not really in accordance with the brochure’s description in which we are shown to be taught about some day to day communication and some grammatical structure of French language. I hope you can understand I feel a bit baffled as to what the nature of this course is.

What I would appreciate is if the college could get back to me to confirm whether this is a history or languages course.  If the latter, I would hope someone may talk to our professor and help him to stay on the main topic.

Thank you,
Vishal

Should there be retirement age?

When should people be made to retire? 55? 65? Should there be a compulsory retirement age?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

Many countries impose a labour rule that employees are entitled to have their retirement once they reach 65 years old. Some people feel that this rule should be strictly enforced; however, others believe that it should be optional and they should be given a chance to decide for themselves. This essay will examine whether people should be allowed to continue working as long as they want or they should be made to retire at a particular stage.

Why should not be forced?

  • They have experience and potential to serve the country. To illustrate, in fields like politics, research, science, acting, singing, painting they can do better than youngsters, so these fields need them
  • They have long vision and can take some better decision sometimes. .( for example, their long vision can take better decision for a nation whereas a young blood can go aggressive way in solving some political issues )
  • Older employees are often more loyal employees and are more committed to implement company policies than youngsters.
  • They have their own right to work until they can.

Why should they make to be retired?

  • Physically or mentally not so strong as young. Get tired or exhausted earlier than young.
  • They are not quite as flexible as youngsters in learning new technology.
  • Their retirement will generate more opportunity and options for jobs for youngsters.
  • Older people should be rewarded by society for their life’s labour by being given generous pensions and the freedom to enjoy their leisure.

Conclusion

To recapitulate, fixed retirement is a good idea not for the companies or societies only but also for the senior people as well as it will allow them to enjoy their leisure and provide them a chance to rest. So I support the idea to enforce the fixed retirement age on people after 65 but of course excluding few certain fields where their role cannot be replaced by youngsters.

Should Govt. spend on arts or not?

Should governments spend money on art, when they have so many other important issues and concerns?

Arts have been enjoying one of the most important positions in our societies throughout the ages and governments have been spending a good amount of money since the time of kings. It seems to be one of the basic needs of humans to surround them with art. However some people feel that government money spent on art is wastage, particularly when there are so many other essential needs to be looked upon. This essay will examine the conflict between those who say art is important and those who feel it is a waste of money.

Why should Govt. spend?
  • Art is the part of culture and tradition, it maintains the cultural heritage.
  • It brings name, fame and glory to the nation.
  • It attracts foreign revenue, hence help to the economy of a nation.
  • Some poor artists can not reveal their skill without government's support.
  • Make some uncommon masterpieces arts accessible to common people.
Why should not?
  • Wastage of public money on the name of art.
  • Misuse to fulfil political purposes.
  • There are many other issues like poverty, education, health etcetera specially in the developing countries like India, Bangladesh etcetera.
  • Can be treated by private companies.

Security cameras should be there or not.

In the fight against crime, police forces and governments are increasingly using security cameras in public places. Some people are opposed to this, saying that it invades our privacy. What do you think?

Security cameras have become ubiquitous in many nations now-a-days. Whereas before they appeared only in banks and at high-security areas, they are now entering into public places such as malls, streets, stadiums and transport. Many people feel this snatches their privacy, but personally I believe though there are some negative impacts they are very essential. This essay will examine whether the advantages of these cameras outweigh their negative impact.

To start with, the closed circuit television cameras not only keep watch in the buildings but provide strong evidences in case of robbery or loot. The police can catch criminals in the act, and can trim down crime. This will make the streets safer for ordinary people. For example, recently in my town one good looking woman stole a diamond necklace and left the shop, the police could find her guilty only with the help of cameras, thus these cameras play a vital role to find out the criminals.  A more important point is that criminals, particularly young offenders or petty criminals will be deterred. They will not be tempted to carry out crimes, and thus society will be a lot safer. Cameras are also cost-effective and unobtrusive. Authorities do not need to spend large amounts of money on police. Hence cameras provide affordable but strong security.

Nevertheless, security cameras are quite far from being a perfect solution. The biggest objection concerns privacy. Many people feel that they should be free to travel or move around a shop, mall, street or country without being photographed or recorded. They feel that being watched constantly is like being in a jail, and that ordinary people are losing their freedom because of these devices. Another point is that although the police say that only criminals have something to fear from the cameras, many people do not trust governments with too much information. Corrupt authorities could use information in the wrong way or twist it to victimize some groups. Thirdly, cameras and computers can make mistakes and the material can be misused to a greater extent.

In brief, although there are some unavoidable drawbacks, we have to compromise a little with our privacy and freedom for the sake of security. And of course, the authority has to balance the need for security with respect for the individual's privacy and freedom.  [385 WORDS]

The best way to save environment is only hiking fuel price. A/D ?

  • The best way to solve the worlds environmental problems is to increase the cost of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Millions of threats have entrapped our earth in these days. And pollution is one of the leading threats to our planet. Thousands of endeavored have been made to sort out the problem of pollution till today. Yet we have not got hundred percent success. A large group of people believe that hiking fuel price can be the best solution to protect the environment. But I don’t agree with them, my essay will give some reasons for my belief and then state this only step is not sufficient.

One reason why this approach may not work is that there is not just one environmental problem the world faces today. If governments did make fuel more expensive, it might well help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we produce and so slow down the rate of global warming and air pollution. However, it would not help with other major problems such as land pollution, overpopulation, the hole in the ozone layer or water pollution. For these problems we need to find other solutions.

A second reason why this policy may not be the most appropriate is that it places the emphasis on governmental policy and not individual responsibility. Ultimately, most environmental problems are the result of the way we as individuals live our lives. If we wish to find a permanent solution to them, we need to learn to live in a way that it is greener or kinder to the environment or we say we must learn to live Eco-friendly life. What governments need to do to make this happen is to ensure there is a global programme to educate people of all ages about the environmental consequences to their actions. Along with this control on industrialization is also important as well.

To put in a nutshell, I believe that increasing the level of taxation on fuel is one of the possible but only a tentative solution to environmental problem and we need some concert solutions. So awareness as well as activeness of people through education and to some extent control on industrialization can solve this problem to far greater extent.

Writing.-2 - Can parents be a good teacher?

  • Children should never be educated at home by their parents. Do you agree or disagree? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.

Childhood and education both are one of the most important parts of our lives. And if we talk about the right place and person for imparting education, I believe that depends on individual. There are many children who can learn better at home whereas on the other hand there are many others who can develop well in schools. But in my opinion I would say it is really better for children to send them at academic institutions. I have some strong reasons to believe this. Let us discuss in detail.

First of all the children need space to run and make noise, to jump and cry. And I believe no one can allow his children to do this all at home. While Kindergartens give such a possibility and a chance to bring their inner child out. They are specifically designed for children only so they give space, a lot of toys and constructions for physical exercises. So, even if you do not have good living conditions, the kindergarten is the best way for you to let your child develop fully. But if one has a large family with many children and enough space, he may keep provide all these facilities at home but in my view only these facilities can not develop a child in all direction but these amenities should be provided with some supervision, guidance and regulations and that can possible only at such special institutions.

Secondly when a child goes to school he can come in contact with some other same age children. And this can be the most effective way of learning and grasping at this age. Such a contact is very important for playing, entertaining, making friends and learning other things. This will develop them not only mentally but practically as well. They will quarrel with one another and will learn to sort out it themselves. They will learn interacting with others and many other important aspects of life which can be very much useful in their future life and this cannot be taught so much effectively between the walls of a home.

On the other side, homes too have their important role to perform in edifying the children and we cannot ignore it. But if some people argue that parents and home can replace teachers and school, I must insist that they will always have some limitations. For example parents can teach them texts but cannot teach them value of friends at home. Parents can explain them value of time and manners but cannot make them realize the importance of discipline and regularity. Parents cannot teach them everything what a teacher can easily make them learn.

In general
, parents can play a major role in educating their children but they can not fully replace schools and teachers. Hence only together they make the most effective union which will contribute a lot in the development of a bright future for any child. [487 words]
