How to Lock Band 7 in Task Response # Part-2 (TR Explained in All 10 IELTS Essay Types )

IELTS Writing Task 2: How to Guarantee Band 7+ in Task Response Part-2 (TR) 📝 How to Lock Band 7+ in IELTS Task Response

📝 How to Lock Band 7 in Task Response for All 10 IELTS Essay Types Part-2

If you are aiming for Band 7+ in IELTS Writing Task 2, mastering Task Response (TR) is non-negotiable. Many students write long essays but still end up stuck at Band 6 because they don’t fully answer the question.

Previously, we discussed the difference between Band 6, 7, and 8 in TR. In this post, let’s focus on how to achieve Band 7+ Task Response in any essay type or pattern in IELTS Writing Task 2.

🔑 Quick Recap: What Is Task Response?

Task Response (TR) checks how well you answer the question. It examines:

  • Whether you addressed all parts of the question.
  • Whether you stated and maintained your opinion clearly.
  • Whether your ideas are developed and supported with reasoning or examples.
  • If your essay stays relevant and focused throughout.

Note: Missing even one part of the question can drop your TR score below Band 7.

🟢 10 IELTS Essay Types & TR Tips

Below, you’ll find what Band 6, 7, and 8 look like in each essay type — and how to level up.

1️⃣ Advantages and Disadvantages

Band 6: Lists points without proper examples.

Band 7: Explains advantages and disadvantages clearly with examples.

Band 8: Goes deeper with relevant evidence and balance.

Tip: Always follow up a point with "why" or "how" to add development.

2️⃣ Do Advantages Outweigh Disadvantages?

Example: “Do the benefits of urbanization outweigh the drawbacks?”

Band 6: Mentions pros/cons but unclear opinion.

Band 7: Clear position supported with logical examples.

Band 8: Detailed reasoning justifying which outweighs which.

Tip: End with a clear comparative judgment.

3️⃣ Positive or Negative Development

Example: “Is increased social media use a positive or negative development?”

Band 7: Clear stance plus good examples.

Band 8: Balanced argument showing short- and long-term effects.

Tip: Mention both effects — immediate vs. future — for depth.

4️⃣ Opinion Essay (Agree / Disagree)

Example: “Children should start school at age 5.”

Band 7: Opinion is clear and relevant examples used.

Band 8: Adds strong reasoning, real-life evidence, and consistency.

Tip: Keep the same position from intro to conclusion.

5️⃣ To What Extent Do You Agree

Example: “Technology makes life easier — to what extent do you agree?”

Band 6: Partial opinion without explanation.

Band 7: Degree of agreement clearly stated and supported.

Band 8: Deep analysis of both views with firm conclusion.

Tip: Use “partially agree” carefully, with logic on both sides.

6️⃣ Discuss Both Views + Opinion

Example: “Some say online learning is better; others prefer classroom study.”

Band 7: Balanced discussion and clear opinion.

Band 8: Builds arguments with real-world examples.

Tip: Dedicate one paragraph per view, then one for your opinion.

7️⃣ Problem and Solution

Example: “What are causes of traffic congestion and how to solve it?”

Band 7: Lists causes & explains practical solutions.

Band 8: Logical ideas connected clearly between problem and solution.

Tip: Show logical links between identified causes and fixes.

8️⃣ Two-Part Question

Example: “Why do people migrate to cities and what problems occur?”

Band 7: Covers both questions but one may lack depth.

Band 8: Both parts are detailed and well-balanced.

Tip: Label parts in your essay (“Answer to 1st Question” & “Answer to 2nd”).

9️⃣ Direct Question Essay

Example: “What are the benefits of reading, and should governments promote it?”

Band 7: Covers all sub-questions with relevant examples.

Tip: Highlight or note both question parts before writing.

🔟 Best Way / To What Extent Essay

Example: “Salary is the most important factor when choosing a job.”

Band 7: Opinion explained comparing logical alternatives.
